FUEL FILLER
I was never happy with the arrangement I had, with the filler in the boot,
but it was a quick way out when summer 2001 was dwindling and I wanted
my car on the road!
RHE suggest cutting
and re-fixing the old Sierra plastic filler to exit through the rear panel,
but try as I might I couldn't get it to fit using the RHE tank. I looked
at the nice shiny Aero style caps, but to fit one of these new, with all
the required pipes and flanges was going to cost about £60 minimum.
Being mean spirited when it comes to spending anything I can avoid, I
hunted around my boxes of ' things that might come in useful one day'
and came up with two filler caps ( thanks Dad ) and sod all piping! Never
mind, a trip to the local steel suppliers and I had a metre of 2"
16 gauge tube for £3.50, which was duly cut and shut to produce
the required 75 degree bend and hey presto, there
was a way of putting petrol in the tank. It has a 4" flange welded
at the top end to bolt or rivet through the rear panel. My welding must
be getting better too, as the joints were watertight after only two attempts,
and the slightest of leaks after the first at that! And I only tried one
tack weld with the gas turned off ( splatter splatter ) and only a couple
of times forgot the earth clamp (
)
!
The cap on the end
was posing a problem however, as I wanted to use the Aston style one I
had, rumoured to be off a Rolls-Royce no less.
Sadly
those cunning lads at Derby had made it a 2 1/2" fitting and after
much head scratching I have to admit I can't work out how to get it on
the end of the 2" tube nicely. The other one is rather plainer, but
being chrome on steel as opposed to brass, is more amenable to sleeving
down then bolting into place. This I have done and the result, whilst
not perfectly 1960's in appearance, is very much better than a bit of
Ford plastic poking out of your 2B's backside.
