Rear Shocks
May 2002

As has been documented elsewhere, the rear suspension was the proverbial dogs dinner. Some action was therefore required to convert to the dogs bollox. To this end, I decided, with some misgivings, to purchase a set of Zemeride coil-over shocks from dear old RHE who were masquerading as Lo-Lo Cost at Stoneleigh show this year. These were £70 each and have 320LB springs.

Prior to painting, but post swearing. The lower bolt is North-South as the trailing arm moves inwards slightly as it moves up. The top bolt should be this way round too, but I didn't realise this until after it was welded in.

To fit these, the bottom of the rollbar needed to be extended back again roughly to where it started before it was shortened to take the original shocks. The piece of 50mm O/D tube was provided by a capri propshaft and sleeved internally with a 6" long tube with 4mm wall thickness. I like to pick and choose my measurement units you see! This is all welded together including the use of spot welds at intervals around the tube, using the cheaper method of drilling a 6mm hole in the outer tube and welding through it with the MIG.

A couple of U sections are welded to the bottom in order to mount the top of the shock with a 3/8" bolt. The lower end of the shock mounts on the original RHE lower bracket to the Sierra spring pan.
