Tricks
and Tips
Please note, many more such things are available on the Robin Hood Owners club website, address on the links page. 1) Use cobalt drills on stainless, as they outlast HSS by a mile. 2) File collars off chrome shafts, don't drill. Also get 12mm ends in place of 8/9mm. 3) Make up plates to locate lower end of Chrome shaft rather that relying on the rather weedy 9mm end - RHE now sending out proper locator. 4) The Sierra petrol tank does fit, but only just and a custom one seems well worth having. These are available either from RHE or various people in the kit industry such as MK engineering. Don't forget that boat tanks can also be useful providing they are e-marked for the SVA 5) The gearbox tunnel sides don't seem to be long enough for the drivers side, if you are going to end up with a gap, put it between the two side panels as it is easier to infill here. Make sure you get the tunnel as narrow as possible to help get the seats in, I think mine was a bit wide. 6) It is difficult to hold the bolt securing the torque tube to the chassis and get a locknut on it, I have welded mine as it is inaccesible once the seats are in the car. 7) Cover bady panels with Cardboard when installed as this will save many a tear over the 3" gash in the metalwork when you hit it with a still spinning drill for the 50th time 8) Use the old Washer tube as sleeving on copper brake pipes if it is the original black ford stuff as it give a bit of extra protection for them and looks neat 9) When collecting kit, check the chassis as some people (Me!) have found jigging problems which may be apparent and can then be sorted out at the factory. In the case of the fixed wishbones being mis-aligned (see build diary) perhaps you could take a right angle with you to quickly they are approximately parallel. 10) If the pedals seem high, you can always put a thick piece of wood on the floor to raise your feet, this will also stiffen up the floor. 11) Get a decent Air Filter, not one of the pancake type that you see on the video. ITG supply a good foam type one that fits under the bonnet better than the otherwise excellent K&N type ones (and also come with a cool sticker you can hide somewhere! - Ian). 12) If you have the 'sliding pillock' suspension system make sure that you stiffen up the cyclewing brackets by welding some ten mm angles to them. If you don't they will quickly bend in use. Ensure that the new pieces do not foul anywhere.
